How to Make Your Own Oversized Bottle Cage

After looking in vain for oversized bottle cages in Bogota, Quito, and every city in between, we decided to make our own. Here`s how:

1) Take a normal water bottle cage and bend it out so that it can accommodate the size of the larger bottle.
2) Attach this cage to the bike with two hose clamps. Ours are mounted to the down tube, where some bike frames have mounts specifically for this type of thing.
3) Take one large hose clamp (or join two smaller ones) and put it around the cage as reinforcement. Keep the hose clamp from slipping by securing it to the cage with string or zip ties.
4) Attach a hose clamp farther up the frame, just a bit lower than the top of the bottle will be. Put a length of string through it.
6) Slide the bottle in and tie the string to attach the neck of the bottle securely to the bike.
7) If you have a suspension, make sure there`s enough clearance when it`s compressed completely.

Voila, water storage!

We`ve now traveled over 1,000 miles (almost 2,000 km) with these handmade bottle cages without any problems whatsoever. Because of how easy it is to replace any part of it, I trust this homemade cage for touring in developing countries over anything you can buy in stores.
